By "gratitude" I mean...

November 21, 2018

Before I head home for the holiday, preparing to cook for 16 (my first time cooking a turkey, gulp!) I wanted to send a quick note of gratitude. That word is used a lot and I think it’s lost some of the meaning behind it, but in this case, when I say I’m grateful, here’s what I mean:

Gratitude for our team: I never imagined the amazing people I’d meet, and so quickly, when I started Spool; it amazes me each day that we’re working towards something that so many others see value it. It’s humbling. Thank you to each person who has joined Spool because you believe in it and you believe in this vision WE are all building together. I could not do it with out every one of you.

Gratitude for our clients: Many days I wake up, get dressed, take my boys to school, walk into my office and feel like today’s the day: today’s the day everyone is going to realize I don’t know what I’m doing. But then I will have a call with a client and hear “we couldn’t do this without you” or “thank you, this makes so much sense” and it pushes down that lingering fear of being an imposter and it fills me with appreciation to work with such amazing clients, who are true partners, and allowing us to help their companies and brands grow. An agency only exists with clients and I'm so grateful for ours who believe in us and see the value that we bring to them through our hard and smart work every day.

Gratitude for flexibility: When I left the old agency world, I was hell-bent to never go back. Little did I know that would parlay itself to become my own agency (but really, Spool is all of ours). Spool has allowed me and everyone on our team to work in the way, style that best suites our needs and as such, allows us to be present for our families. Each day I am grateful to have the ability to take my boys to school in the morning and to be home in time to make us dinner (which, don’t give me too much credit for, usually entails boiling water). I am grateful that Spool can exist to provide this same flexibility to our whole team and as such, empowers us to raise our families and grow our careers.

Gratitude for my family: My husband. My boys. My parents, sisters, brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, mother-and father-in-law, I feel so lucky to have this family that I love, wholly. Most of us are in Chicago and Evanston this week for Thanksgiving and I will have them all around our table and will probably cry a few times, but my heart is so full for each one of them. Chief among them is Ian, Teddy and Archie, the boys I love most with all my heart.

Gratitude for friendships: How lucky that I get to work with fierce, brilliant women and then get to come home on the evenings and weekends and have friends who are equally brilliant, hilarious, kind, supportive and present. From all walks of my life, I'm grateful for the friends I've made and have stayed connected to at each chapter.

I wanted to share this because Spool and all it encompasses is such a huge factor in what I’m grateful this year and I can’t wait to see where we are a year from now and how our vision has grown.

I wish you and your families a happy and healthy Thanksgiving.

Best,

Catherine Merritt
